Over 300 members and officers of Local 100 celebrated Dia de los Obreros with food, song and speeches on June 12.
“This is a great occasion to recognize the contributions of our Latino and Latina brothers and sisters to Local 100 and to the labor movement in general,” said Acting President Curtis Tate.
Both he and Vice President Nelson Rivera made brief remarks to welcome the crowd to the event, which was held at the Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ’s union hall in SoHo.
Local 100 used the occasion to honor Nelson Gonzalez, President of the Bronx-based Hispanic Transit Society, and Sonia Ivany, President of the New York City Chapter of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement.
Three Local 100 members provided the evening’s entertainment: mambo dancers Jennifer Silva and George Cuevas, who perform as Siempre en el Ritmo, and reggaeton artist Hector Cartagena, who is Recording Secretary of the Local 100 section at White Plains Bus.
Civil Court Judge Fernando Tapia delivered an informative talk about ways for minority teenagers to interact with police officers in a non-confrontational manner.
This was the best-attended Dia de los Obreros celebration in several years.
Local 100’s celebration of Dia de los Obreros is one many similar events sponsored by the Union, including Irish-American Day, Italian-American Day, Russian-American Day, Indian American Day, Black History Day and Women's Day.
