Thousands of Local 100 members celebrated Family Day at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township New Jersey on June 20.
“I can’t remember the last time I saw so many Union members having such a great time,” remarked Acting President Curtis Tate, who joined the crowds to brave the off-and-on rain that sometimes forced TWU members to don ponchos or get under cover.
In the afternoon, when there were long periods with no precipitation, the amusement park was a sea of Local 100 Family Day t-shirts and armbands, as celebrants made up for lost time on the rides.
For those seeking a timeout, the picnic area was open from 11:00am through 6:00pm with an all-you-can-eat buffet.
“The rides and the food were unforgettable,” said Local 100 Vice President Barry Roberts.
In mid-afternoon hundreds visited the dolphin show sponsored exclusively for Family Day attendees by Central Medical Services of Westrock.
Meanwhile, back in the picnic area, Local 100 members lined up for the chance to dunk Secretary Treasurer Ed Watt in exchange for a $10 contribution to the Union’s Widows and Orphans Fund. “We have a surprising number of members who have accurate throwing arms,” remarked Watt, as he climbed out of the dunk tank for the tenth time. “Or perhaps I just bring out the best in them.”
In response to the outpouring of enthusiasm on June 20, Local 100 has entered into discussion with Six Flags about a possible return visit later this year.
