Solidarity Rallies Continue as Contract Deadline Nears

Wednesday, May 10, 2023 — Approximately 300 union members rallied today outside a subway car overhaul shop/ rail yard in northern Manhattan, the latest in a series of actions demanding a fair contract from the MTA.

Blowing whistles, chanting slogans, and demonstrating solidarity with spirit, the boisterous group joined Local 100 President Richard Davis, Secretary-Treasurer John Chiarello, CED Vice President Shirley Martin, Chair Matt Ahern, and other officers, outside the 207th St. facility.

Fresh Pond Depot Rally Demonstrates Solidarity

Approximately 100 Bus Operators and other Local 100 members rallied outside of Fresh Pond Depot Wednesday in a show of solidarity as contract negotiations continue. The spirited group chanted "No Contract, No Peace" and "We are The Union" just outside management offices, prompting cars and busses to honk their horns in support. They also carried signs with messages to the MTA, including "Respect and Recognition. Put it in the Contract."

The rally was the second of four this week put together by the Local 100 Organizing Department in conjunction with Vice Presidents and other Departmental Officers. Additional rallies at other work locations are in the works!

Bus Op Sam Johnson, 97, Gets Birthday Wish!

Retired Bus Operator Sam Johnson's family called the Department of Buses with a special request -- that he be allowed to get in the driver's seat for his 97th birthday. It came together like clockwork on May 2nd, the rain clearing just as Operator Johnson got out of his car and made his way to a NYCT bus with its direction sign wishing him Happy Birthday.

Union Push for Bus Cockpits Gets Results

The first MTA buses with cockpits could be on the streets by the end of the year, transit officials said.

A new preliminary design, expected on a small number of buses for a “proof of concept” testing program, will completely encapsulate Operators and prevent assaults, the MTA said.

Securing the safety upgrade has been one of Local 100’s major goals. Riders would no longer be able to toss objects or reach around and strike Operators like they do now with the existing partitions.

Union Rallies for Dismissed School Bus Driver

APRIL 20 -- TWU Local 100 stepped up on behalf of a Greenwich, CT school bus driver mistreated by district bureaucrats.

About 50 TWU Local 100 officers and members marched into the Greenwich Board of Education meeting where Local 100 President Richard Davis and Division Chair Gus Moghrabi blasted school administrators for removing Nadia Micourt from service after 23 years on the job without a single accident. A school administrator claimed she observed Micourt cross the yellow line multiple times on March 31– and unilaterally decertified Micourt days later, meaning she can’t drive in the district.

Davis Kicks Off Contract Negotiations

MONDAY, APRIL 17 — Stressing the service and sacrifices made by transit workers throughout the COVID-19 Pandemic, TWU Local 100 President Richard Davis kicked off contract negotiations with the MTA today with a presentation of general demands culled from membership surveys and meetings.

"We deserve a fair contract. We mean business. Our time is now,” Davis said in a statement after the presentation.

APRIL 12 -- Local 100 President Richard Davis blasted recommendations by a conservative “watchdog” organization that transit workers pay more for healthcare and the MTA should eliminate Conductor jobs to save money. “We’re not going to let anyone balance the M.T.A. budget on the backs of transit workers, especially after all we did and endured during the Covid-19 pandemic,” Davis is quoted as saying  in today's New York Times.

The Times’ Ana Ley wrote: "The pandemic’s toll on transit workers — at least 131 were killed by the virus — has made any austerity push especially charged.

Union Mourns Jane LaTour, 76, Fighter for Women's Rights in Labor Movement

Jane LaTour, 76, died last Monday in hospice care after battling cancer. She was an outspoken champion for women in non-traditional occupations who invigorated the New York City labor movement on the issue and was a source of inspiration to many in the movement. Her death was reported by her husband, former TWU Local 100 organizer and staff rep Russell Smith, who worked in the tour bus industry.

Thousands Throng Albany on Lobby Day

MARCH 28 — As MTA budget talks went down to the wire, over two thousand transit workers descended on Albany with our priorities in hand. We want to see the Assembly and Senate pass Governor Hochul’s MTA budget ask, but there’s a lot more legislators have to do to win our continued support.

RTO Mourns Train Operator Alan Ricks, 48

Members in Rapid Transit Operations are mourning the untimely passing of Train Operator Alan Ricks, 48, husband of Train Operator Cherese Winley-Ricks of Subdivision B.

Brother Ricks died at about 9 PM on March 15th in North Merrick, when his car crashed on the Meadowbrook Parkway south of Exit 6, according to Newsday. Both Ricks and his wife were residents of North Babylon. According to police, the cause of the crash is under investigation.
