Son of hero Train Operator Garrett Goble picks the winner for the scholarship award made in his honor

Garrett Goble’s eldest son, Noah, helped pick the winner of the first annual TWU Local 100 scholarship honoring the slain Train Operator.

Noah Goble, 11, randomly picked a ticket for the Garrett Goble Memorial Scholarship from the lottery barrel at a public drawing held Monday at the Union Hall. 

Attendees, including Garrett’s mother, Vicki, and wife, Delilah, erupted in applause when Scholarship Coordinator Shannon Poland announced the winner, Jake Burns, also is the son of a Train Operator: George Burns.

“You couldn’t have scripted it better,” Poland said.

Jake will receive $2,500 towards his tuition at Yale University. He is pursuing a political science degree. 

“This is a fitting tribute for to a true Local 100 hero,” Local 100 President Tony Utano said of the scholarship. “Garrett’s bravery and dedication will never be forgotten. We’re going to do this every year. Every year a child out there will receive a scholarship in Garrett’s name.”

More than $125,000 in combined scholarship grants are being distributed this year, thanks to the generous funding provided by M3 Technology and RGLZ, two union vendors. 

Garrett died after an arsonist a set a fire March 27, 2020, on Goble’s train. Garrett helped riders evacuate before he was overcome by smoke.

The annual scholarships are open to members in good standing, and their spouses, children, and grandchildren. Retiree family members also are eligible if the transit worker retired in good standing.
