Outside MTA Public Hearings, The Union’s Voice Rings Out

A powerful rally on March 4 put over 3,000 TWU Local 100 members in the streets outside the MTA’s Manhattan Public Hearing at FIT. We were joined by a large contingent of high school and college students, vociferously protesting the MTA’s planned elimination of student metrocards. TWU Local 100 got strong support from allies in the union movement and government.

TWU To Walder: Join us in Washington

At an early-morning press conference outside MTA Headquarters on Jan. 27, TWU Local 100 President John Samuelsen called on MTA Chairman Jay Walder to join him in Washington to pursue federal assistance to avert service cuts and fare increases for students. He was joined by Councilman James Vacca, Chairman of the Transportation Committee; Bob Astrowsky, Assistant Secretary of the United Federation of Teachers; Norman Brown, Business Representative, IAM Local 15; Gene Russianoff of the Straphangers Campaign, and rank and file members of TWU Local 100 who were preparing to testify against the service cuts to the MTA Board.

MTA Retreats on Challenge to Arbitration Award

Just days after Local 100 President John Samuelsen informed MTA Chair Jay Walder in a one-on-one meeting that any step toward labor peace was contingent on resolution of the ongoing contract arbitration dispute, the Authority decided to yield rather than continue the fight.
