Tree that Struck 4 Train Came within Inches of Operator's Face

The 38-year-old Operator, bloodied by scratches from the wood and broken glass, miraculously survived.

Traumatized from the shocking ordeal, she was taken to a local hospital and has since been discharged. There were no reported injuries among the nearly 200 passengers on board, who were safely evacuated onto a rescue train.

According to the T/O, the protruding log came within a couple of inches of her face. Describing it as a “freak accident”, she said if she had moved her body at all during the impact, the outcome would have been “a different story”.

President John V. Chiarello spoke to the Train Operator this morning, calling her a hero, and noting “these are the unforeseen dangers our members face in the line of duty. One minute you’re operating a train, and within seconds you’re confronted with a life or death situation. If not for this member’s wherewithal and calmness, what happened last night could have easily been a tragedy”.
