Over $170,000 in Scholarships Given at Annual M3 Awards Luncheon

AUGUST 13, 2026—This afternoon at the union hall, 61 lucky winners were honored by Local 100 and M3 Technology after being awarded scholarships that totaled $174,000.

The students, all children, grandchildren, spouses of members or members themselves, were drawn at random in June.

“I want you to thank your parents,” Chiarello told the younger scholarship winners. “Think about that—the investment of their time, their money in you, their children. Don’t take them for granted.”

Hosted by Scholarship Fund Trustee Shannon Poland, the event got started after a buffet lunch and the program named every winner.

The students are going to a wide variety of schools, from nearby LIU Post and New York Institute of Technology to Northeastern University in Boston, Howard University in Washington, D.C. and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

The Garrett Goble Hero Scholarship, now $4,000, is named for a Train Operator who was killed when the train he was in was set on fire by an arsonist in 2020 but who managed to evacuate the passengers before he died.

This year’s winner of the Garrett Goble Hero Scholarship is Madyson Edwards, who sadly lost her own father, Track Worker Henry Stephenson, in April. Madyson will be putting the scholarship money to use this fall at Rutgers University.

“As I walked around the room, I was so proud to see the younger people and some of the people continuing their education,” said Chiarello to the crowd. “That is the future of America. If you look around this room there’s all different types of people—every color, every race, new immigrants, old immigrants. We’re all immigrants. And you should be proud, proud to be here today.”
