Multi-agency Investigation into Conductor's Death on the Job is Underway

“It’s feels like getting kicked in the stomach and you want to throw up,” said Chiarello. “Everyone in the union I think of as my family and the younger ones as my children.”

The horrific incident is being investigated by the NTSB, New York City Transit’s Joint Safety Task Force and Local 100’s Safety Team, and Chiarello added that he looked forward to the results of the investigation so changes could be made.

Chiarello added that until the investigation is completed, the union cannot say what definitively happened, but his heart also went out to the train crew who was on the D train.

“Not only was a life lost but the train crew who were involved will be traumatized for the rest of their lives by this absolute nightmare.”

Conductor-Towers Division Chair Chris Drummond, who also spoke with McCullum’s family, reiterated that the union was standing by them in mourning and support.

“This is a solemn day,” said Drummond. This is dangerous work. Our brothers and sisters risk their life every day so passengers can get to and from and get to where they’re going safely.”

Chiarello thanked Governor Hochul for calling and expressing her condolences, and was joined at the press conference by her secretary as well as representatives from the MTA, including New York City Transit President Demetrious Crichlow.

“We stand together with the union and the investigating agencies to ensure that the cause is found,” said Crichlow.
