IB Image

APRIL 20, 2026—The TWU Local 100 family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear brother and friend, Dylan U. Valle, on April 16 after he was involved in a motorcycle accident. He was just 55.

Valle, a Bronx native, was a talented organizer whose tenure at Local 100 included expanding the School Bus Division to bring higher wages and stronger benefits to bus drivers and attendants in New York City, Westchester, and Connecticut.

“He was always down for a good fight,” said Frank McCann, Director of Organizing. “Truly an all-around good guy who made time for his family but always answered the call when his union brothers and sisters needed him. He will be missed dearly.”

After citing the especially snowy winter we moved New York through and the continuous physical attacks on members, President John V. Chiarello summed up one aspect of our contract demands.

“Your transit workforce is stuck in an affordability crisis.” said Chiarello to officials from the MTA. “We’re seeking substantial wage increases for our labor.”

Judge Skeptical of MTA's End Run Around Safety and Staffing Levels

APRIL 8, 2026—Union officers and rank and file members packed into a state Supreme Civil Court hearing today to determine whether the MTA acted lawfully by unilaterally closing subway station booths for up to 8 hours at a time.

New York City Transit issued a memo in January, stating that station booths which were unstaffed as a result of unplanned emergencies—such as an agent going out sick—would no longer be backfilled on overtime.

MTA attorney Neil Abramson said the policy only applied to 19 large stations with more than one station booth. He argued that the customer service agreement that the union entered into in 2023, moving Station Agents out of booths for a portion of their shifts, gave management that right.

Attorney Arthur Schwartz, speaking for the union and the Center for Independence of the Disabled, New York, said that the MTA had the obligation to hold a public hearing before it could move ahead with the partial closure of a subway station, which is what previous court cases had established is the consequence of failing to staff a booth.

Dr. Sharon McLennon-Weir, Executive Director of CIDNY and Antonio Reynoso, Brooklyn Borough President are co-plaintiffs in the suit. Reynoso was also present at the hearing.

MTA Bus Operator Attacked on Bronx/Yonkers Border, Left with Brain Bleeds

IB Image

APRIL 6, 2026—On Saturday night at about 8:27 PM, our brother Johnny Rodriguez, a 13-year veteran operator out of the MTA Bus Yonkers Depot, was punched, choked and violently body-slammed while simply doing his job.

After a collision at Riverdale Ave. and Ellsworth Street on the Bronx/Yonkers border, Operator Rodriguez exited his bus to assess damage, something every professional operator is trained to do. While attempting to handle the situation, he was viciously attacked from behind by the driver of a pickup truck. The assault left him with two brain bleeds, a concussion and neck, shoulder and back injuries. His assailant then fled the scene, leaving our brother beaten on the ground.

“We will not accept violence as ‘part of the job’,” said President John V. Chiarello. “We will not stay silent, and we will not stop until justice is served.”

APRIL 2, 2026—It with great sorrow that Maintenance of Way announces the passing of Track Worker Henry V. Stephenson Jr., who succumbed to cancer on March 24 at the age of 54.

A 32-year veteran of the department, Stephenson was hardworking, well liked and a strong supporter of Local 100.

“This one hits home, he was a very, very good friend of mine,” said Carlos Albert, Track Division Chair.

Albert first met Stephenson when they joined transit just a few weeks apart in 1993 and remembered the two working side by side in the aftermath of 9/11.

“We were down there in the pit working our tails off,” said Albert. “With Henry there was a lot of blood, sweat and tears.”

Albert said he had last spoken to his old friend a couple of weeks before his death, and that even while gravely ill, Stephenson was concerned with his family's wellbeing.

Stephenson is survived by his wife Cassandra, son Mateo, and daughter Madyson among other relatives.

TWU Local 100 Mourns ATU Queens Bus Operator, Innocent Bystander Shot and Killed

MARCH 29, 2026—TWU Local 100 stands with ATU after the tragic innocent bystander shooting of one of their members on Tuesday.

Demitri O. McKay, Jr., who operated the Q2, was with his girlfriend at a burger restaurant in Kew Gardens when he was fatally shot in what cops told the Daily News was "a gang-related beef". McKay, who was not the intended target, was just 29.

His devastated father told the newspaper that McKay was familar with the restaurant because the Bus Operator previously worked with the disabled at a nearby nonprofit organization.

"My son had such a big heart. And they shot my son in the heart," Demitri McKay, Sr. told The News while crying.

McKay, who began operating buses for the MTA in 2024, had an 8-year-old son.

No arrests have been made.

Services for McKay will be held Friday, April 10 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church of Hollis, located at 202-03 Hollis Avenue in Queens. A viewing will begin at 9 AM and the homegoing will start at 10 AM.
