TWU Local 100, Public Safety Alliance Demand Action Following Brutal Attack on Station Cleaner

SEPTEMBER 1, 2026—TWU Local 100 Local 100 President John V. Chiarello stood alongside Stations Vice President Robert Kelley and Detectives’ Endowment Association President Scott Munro today to demand greater protection for transit workers following the brutal attack on a Station Cleaner at Times Square–42nd Street.

Photos displayed (viewer discretion is advised) at the press conference showed the severity of the gashes suffered by the member, who required stitches and continues to recover at home.

“This is the human side of what happens to our members,” Chiarello said. “We come to work to move New York every single day, and we expect to get home in the same condition that we came to work in.”

Joint Statement from TWU Local 100 and the NYS Public Safety Alliance on the Violent Assault of a Station Cleaner at Times Square

AUGUST 27, 2026—TWU Local 100 is outraged by the violent attack on one of our Station Cleaners at the Times Square 42nd Street subway station.

The member, who has asked that his name not be released, was nearing the end of his shift when he went to retrieve equipment to clean up a recurring leak inside the station. According to the member, the condition had been reported multiple times but had not been repaired.

While approaching the area where he needed to work, the Cleaner encountered a man urinating nearby. After addressing the situation, the member asked the individual to move so that he could access the area and clean the platform.

The individual became irate and the encounter quickly turned physical.

In memory of Dolly Parton

AUGUST 26, 2026—Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” will always hold a special place in the hearts of working people everywhere.

We remember Dolly with gratitude for the joy she brought to so many and for the way she stood up for working people and women fighting for equal pay, equal rights, and a fair shot in every job, including ours. That same heart showed through her philanthropy, from putting millions of books into children’s hands to supporting disaster relief, education, and medical research.

Whether you work 9 to 5, 3 to 11, midnight to 8, or anything in between, working people keep this city moving. Unions help make sure everyone has a voice, respect, and a fair shake on the job.

We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.

This is what Union Solidarity looks like!

AUGUST 25, 2026—TWU Local 100 President John V. Chiarello joined PBA President Patrick Hendry in making the rounds at the NYPD’s 1st Precinct, meeting with officers and reinforcing the bond between two unions whose members serve New Yorkers every day.

The PBA is fighting for a fair and equitable contract, and so are we while working under an expired one. Our members also face alot of the same challenges. We both face assaults on the job, dangerous working conditions, and the constant fight for the respect, dignity, and compensation we deserve.

Whether you wear a badge or move millions of New Yorkers, working people should never have to fight alone.

Their fight is our fight. Our fight is their fight. We’re in this together.

Union strong. New York strong.

AUGUST 13, 2026—This afternoon at the union hall, 61 lucky winners were honored by Local 100 and M3 Technology after being awarded scholarships that totaled $174,000.

The students, all children, grandchildren, spouses of members or members themselves, were drawn at random in June.

“I want you to thank your parents,” Chiarello told the younger scholarship winners. “Think about that—the investment of their time, their money in you, their children. Don’t take them for granted.”

TWU Local 100 Marches, Dines and Dances in Sunday's Dominican Day Parade

IB Image

AUGUST 10, 2026—Hundreds of Local 100 officers and members came out for yesterday’s Dominican Day Parade to celebrate the people, culture and history of the Dominican Republic.

We danced and marched up 6th Avenue in midtown, joined by a decorated bus and a float with a band playing in the beginning and a DJ taking over for the parade route. Bachata, reggaeton and dembow kept the crowd moving and singing along.

President John Chiarello, surrounded by Local 100 officers, spoke about the struggle for independence that Dominicans never gave up on.

“The Dominican people declared independence not once, not twice, but three times over the years,” he said. “That’s real determination, and a real commitment to getting it right.”

Chiarello continued, drawing a comparison to our ongoing fight for a fair contract.

“On this happy occasion of the Dominican Parade I want to let you know that we will keep fighting,” said the president. “We’re going to make them know that we’re out there, we move New York and we mean something, because you mean something to me.”

"Cuando luchamos, ganamos!" he said to cheers from the crowd.

Assailant of Station Agent Gets Seven Years in Prison in First Sentence of its Kind

AUGUST 6, 2026—Justice was finally served today at New York Supreme Criminal Court for one Station Agent when her attacker was sentenced to seven years in state prison for Assault 2. This was the first time the maximum sentence was applied in such an assault case—the state law passed in 2002 established the seven year sentence for attacks on a long list of municipal, state and frontline workers, including members of New York City Transit.

On September 16, 2024, Robert Ray approached our sister Local 100 member while she was on the job at the 53rd St./Lexington Ave. subway station and punched her in the face, causing her to fall to the ground and resulting in bruising and swelling.

Important: Members With Dependents on Medical Plans Must Recertify by August 21

IB Image

JULY 26, 2026—By now members with dependents enrolled on their medical plans should have received a letter from the MTA about verifying those dependents are still eligible to remain on their plans.

This is a periodic process that began in 2021 and will be completed every five years.

Unfortunately, the electronic version of the MTA’s letter links to an incorrect website several times. The correct website is MTA.verifi1.com, not MTA.verifil.com.

We have requested that the MTA change it and are awaiting an update, but in the meantime, it is crucial that members visit the website and submit the required documentation by August 21 to ensure that all eligible dependents continue to receive health coverage.

Ernst & Young LLP, a third party company, will contact you to complete the process.

If you have questions while submitting your documents, please call the Verifi1 helpline at (877) 769-7787 between 8 AM and 6 PM Monday through Friday.
