    Two of New York City’s top labor leaders voiced anger on Tuesday about the agreement by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Comptroller John C. Liu to overhaul the city’s pension plans.

    The bill, which would also bring a a potential bonanza of $1.5 billion to the city through the sale of 1,500 new Yellow Cab medallions, is being championed by Mayor Bloomberg and TLC Commissioner Yassky. Still, Gov. Cuomo has declined to sign it for four months. Yellow Cab lobbyists are hoping he will veto it and force a new fight in Albany next year.

    Countering the union support for Keystone jobs are green labor advocates who try to fuse economic justice and climate change issues. The Transport Workers Union and Amalgamated Transit Union have both opposed the pipeline. Canada's Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, which represents oil and gas industry workers, has criticized Keystone XL as a double-threat to both jobs and the environment.

    An overhead power line fell onto a NJ TRANSIT train on the Northeast Corridor line in Metuchen Tuesday morning, NJ TRANSIT said. The power was cut, and no injuries were reported. Roughly 700 passengers were evacuated.

    New York City is moving forward with plans to use sensors to improve parking management, along the lines of San Francisco’s pioneering SFPark system. The program will be unveiled next year, Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan announced at a conference on transportation and technology held last Friday at Columbia University.

    It's not a great time to be a transit rider. Metro areas across the country are addressing budget shortages for public transportation by cutting service, or raising fares, or doing both. Bad as things are for passengers, it may be an even worse time to be a transit worker. In several large cities, passenger abuse of workers is on the rise.

    The cost of commuting by transit is set to rise in 2012 for 2.7 million Americans. The Commuter Tax Benefit program that allows workers to use up to $230 in pre-tax dollars each month for mass transit costs will expire if Congress doesn’t renew it by the end of the year. The parallel benefit for car commuters will stay in place.
