Press Advisory: Mile Square School Bus Workers To Demand Wage Parity, Safe Work Environment, An End to Management Bully Tactics

What: Workers at Mile Square School Bus – the company that provides a substantial portion of student transportation for the Yonkers, Mount Vernon and New Rochelle public schools – will be out in force March 6, 2014 to demand wage parity with other Yonkers-based companies, and to protest deteriorating working conditions and management intimidation.

The company’s 600 Drivers, Matrons and Mechanics – members of Transport Workers Union Local 100 – will also voice dissatisfaction over the lack of progress on contract negotiations. The largely Hispanic workforce earns anywhere from $2.00 - $3.50 per hour less than other Westchester-based school bus companies.

Poor conditions include unheated crew rooms and restroom facilities, and non-working toilets.

The Union is also facing off with management for bullying workers into taking unsafe buses onto the road, in violation of the State DMV’s 19-A Safety Inspection regulations.
