Gleason Depot Mourns Bus Operator Michael Creary, 45, of COVID-19
Bus Operators and Maintainers at Brooklyn’s Jackie Gleason Depot in Sunset Park are mourning the untimely death of veteran Bus Operator Michael Creary. Creary, 45, passed away from COVID-19.
Gleason Depot Chair Jennine Gregory said: "Michael called me up around the 13th of July, and told me that he had COVID. I texted him a few days later, and he said he was looking forward to getting back to work. He said, 'I’m getting stronger.'
“Then all of a sudden people are running in here to the Union office on Saturday (July 31) saying he had passed. His sister in law called to let me know that he had died."
Dozens of co-workers expressed their sorrow on Depot Chair Gregorys’ Facebook page after she posted this notice on July 31: “Today we found out Gleason/Grand lost another Great Guy to this dreadful Covid, Michael Creary. We will pray for his family. Please keep them in your Prayers."
She remembered Creary as a low-key, dependable union Brother who kept to himself, wasn’t known to have a family or girlfriend, but loved his car, a burgundy Dodge Charger.
“He always walked into the union office to say hello,” she recalled. “He was at Gleason for four years, before that at Grand Avenue. He will be missed.” He had ten years of service with NYCT.
TA Surface Vice President JP Patafio said Creary was a good Operator whose loss will be keenly felt in the Department. He encouraged all Operators and Maintainers to get vaccinated.
