Local 100 Mourns Collecting Agent Betty Jean George, Former Stations Vice Chair
TWU Local 100 is mourning the passing of Collecting Agent and former union officer Betty Jean George. Sister George died on April 1, 2021 at Brookdale Hospital after a long battle with cancer. She was 67 and had been on the job as a Collecting Agent for 20 years. A viewing will take place on Friday, April 23rd at Grace Funeral Chapels, 607 N. Conduit Avenue, in Brooklyn, from 9AM to 11AM. A funeral service will be held at 11AM.
Della Cadichon, chair of the Collecting Agents section of Stations Division, said: “There are no words to explain the shock of all Collectors when we heard the news of the death of our beloved sister and co-worker Betty George, the 'Queen Bee.' She will be sorely missed by her co-workers and everyone in Stations.” Sister George had served as union Vice Chair of Stations for Collecting Agents. “She dedicated her life to serve the Collecting Agents for a long period of time,” said Cadichon. “She was one of a kind, was never afraid to speak up to defend her co-workers in the Central Revenue Facility. We are all in mourning for her and her family.”
Betty Jean George, daughter of Mr. Eugene George and Ms. Katie Mae Kyle, was born on July 20, 1953 in Harlem. She was raised by her grandmother, attended New York City Public schools and graduated from Washington Irving High School. Before joining New York City Transit in 2001, Sister George worked for 10 years with the Administration for Children’s Services for the City of New York as a childcare provider. She later earned her CDL license and began working for Brinks Armored Car Services.
Sister George was dedicated to her community and church. She became an Eastern Star in the Masons in the 1980’s, and she rose to become Grand Matron of Queen Bathsheba Chapter 31. She loved to give back to her community. She was also a member of Refuge Temple Baptist Church. She earned Her nickname “Queen Bee” for being an accomplished Bid Whist and Spades player.
Betty, leaves to cherish her memory, her two children: her eldest Angelique Ramirez and her son Jonathan George; step-children, Micheal Ramirez Jr.; Elizabeth Newsome; Melody Turner; and Bruce Sinkler. God-daughter: Mariah Christmas; Daughter In-law:Vanessa Cintron. Three sisters: Betty Broady-Ward; OraLee “Shirley” George; and Barbara Ann George; and Brother: James Broady ( Pennsylvania)Sister In-laws: Janice Broady;(Pennsylvania) Dina, Tita, Aida, Annette Ramirez; and Lucy Coubertier; Brothers-in-law: Carlo, Victor, Johnny, and Manny. Close friends, Angie Branham; Robert Sanders; Victoria Pittman-Wilson; Jeanette Lewis; Russell Smith; Anthony Sligh; and Joseph Davis . She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, close family, friends and co-workers.
