Local 100 Mourns Tragic Loss of Eddie Ivey

 

On Saturday, Local 100 members will say their final goodbye to Eddie Ivey (see event listing for time and location for services).

Bus Operator Eddie Ivey was part of the intrepid band of Local 100 volunteers who drove a fleet of buses to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005.

Now, the good-hearted, universally liked Local 100 member is dead, the victim of a senseless act of gun violence at an annual gathering over the weekend.

He was only 39 years old, and leaves behind his mother, a son and his grieving long-time girlfriend, Mimi Mendez, also a Bus Operator and Local 100 member.

TA Surface Vice President Stephan Thomas said: “Everyone liked Eddie. He had a nice word and a smile for everyone. He was the last person I said goodbye to at the end of the work on Friday. Now he’s gone. It’s very, very sad.”

Surface Chair Willie Rivera echoed those sentiments. “Everyone at the depot is in shock. Everyone loved Eddie. He was such a good person.”

Another close friend, J.P. Patafio, who was with Eddie on the New Orleans relief run, said: “Eddie was a great person to be around. He was able to keep everyone cool and calm during the Katrina mission. He was a great friend, a great union member and is going to be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.”

Eddie worked out of the East New York depot for the past five years. He spent the previous seven years at Gleason.
