SAFETY ADVISORY: Air Quality Health Alert – November 9, 2024

Due to ongoing wildfires in New Jersey and the surrounding tri-state area, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) and Department of Health (NYS DOH) have issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for New York City and neighboring regions, effective through Sunday, November 10, 2024.

These conditions pose significant risks for anyone working outdoors, particularly those with respiratory sensitivities.

Guidelines to Prioritize Your Health and Safety

Please follow these precautions to reduce exposure and protect yourself:

  • Limit Outdoor Tasks: Avoid non-essential outdoor work whenever possible.
  • Request Indoor Assignments: Whenever practical, prioritize working indoors.

For Essential Outdoor Work, Please Follow These Safety Measures:

  • Take Frequent Breaks and Stay Hydrated: Take extra breaks and keep hydrated throughout your shift.
  • Rotate Assignments: Rotate staff frequently, especially for physically demanding tasks.
  • Use Air-Conditioned Spaces: Utilize air-conditioned vehicles or indoor facilities for relief breaks.
  • Increased Supervision: Supervisors should check in regularly with team members in the field and monitor for any health concerns.

To reduce exposure, N95 or KN95 masks are available upon request.
