Trackworkers are mourning the untimely passing of Thomas McManus, a Shop Steward who worked nights as a Union Rep. He retired just two years ago after 32 years with NYCT as a Crane Operator. He suffered a massive stroke Sunday night, and following his wishes, his family removed life support and donated his organs.
TWU International President John Samuelsen, who knew Brother McManus well, said: "Tommy was an excellent Union Rep, fearless against the bosses, super smart, super supportive of the TWU, and, most importantly, a super decent human being."
Track Division Chairman Carlos Albert called McManus, "Arguably one of the best Crane Operators Track has ever had. He was a true artist at his craft."
Thomas McManus was born in The Bronx, where he spent his childhood and young adult life. Mac developed a keen sense of street knowledge, values, and common sense that would guide him throughout his life. He began working for New York City Transit in March 1988, after meeting his future wife, Holly, and becoming a family man. Not long after, he moved with his family to the Poconos so he could give his kids the life he knew they deserved.
In spite of the long commute, Mac gave over 32 years of service to NYCT. He was a true Union brother. Generous and knowledgeable as a Union Rep, he shared the seemingly infinite knowledge he had as a Crane operator and he made himself available to anyone who needed assistance.
Mac, Gone Way Too Soon. We will miss you, Brother.
