Union's Primary Wins Include 3 Borough Presidents and Manhattan District Attorney

“We put troops on the ground and racked up some good wins,” Chiarello said. “This is what political action and the Committee On Political Education is all about: supporting candidates who support us and can help us achieve our goals.”

While Bragg has faced criticism from some critics, the district attorney has been listening to Local 100 and advocating for harsher penalties for criminals convicted of assaulting transit workers in Manhattan. Most of the endorsed candidates are Democrats, but Vernikov (R-Gerritsen Beach/Coney Island) has been a reliable ally in the Council. She has increased scrutiny on the MTA after hearing Local 100’s concerns.

Local 100 endorses candidates who support transit workers, regardless of their party affiliation, Political Action Director Sharase DeBouse said.

“This is an important part of building union power,” Chiarello said. “Workers always have to fight to improve their jobs and lives, and when you’re going into a fight, it’s always good to have some allies at your side.”
