Union Holds Press Conference to Highlight Assault on Station Agent

JULY 1 -- A press conference was held today at the union hall to highlight the case of Marshalee Reid, a Station Agent who was assaulted by two women at the New Lots Avenue Station in Brooklyn. At about 1:15 p.m. On Saturday, June 28th, Station Agent Reid was providing customer service when she was jumped by one lady who had vaulted the turnstile and another lady who used the gate to enter the station without paying.

Miss Reid was thrown to the ground. She suffered facial lacerations and a swollen hand. At the time, the Station Agent was recovering from brain surgery which took place last year. She was on restricted duty at the station.

Michael Cumberbatch Recalls 32 Years of Moving New York

JULY 1 -- Your Train Operator glides to a smooth stop. You make your connection to the next train. Your mind is on anything beside the trip because you know you’re in good hands. The best subway ride is the one you don’t even notice.

Without fanfare or drama (except for his just concluded retirement party) Train Operator Michael Cumberbatch, 55, is cruising to the end of 32 years with New York City Transit. Once he brings that final train into Corona Yard, it’s time for another cruise. Along with his wife, he’ll first head to Mexico in July, then to Honduras, before ending up in the Bahamas. Next comes a trip to St. Kitts. And then there’s a flight to his home town in Barbados for three weeks of well-deserved rest.

In his 32 years Michael has run the bases on the experiences that mark the routine of a TWU Train Operator. There was the blackout of August 14, 2003, when he recalls pulling into Times Square driving a 7 Train just as the lights started to flicker.

Union Celebrates Diversity at the Pride Parade

An energetic group of dozens of TWU Local 100 members danced and strutted their way down 5th Avenue as part of the big 2025 pride parade, led by RTO Tower Operator William Broome who carried a pride flag. Safety Director Celeste Kirkland and TUF Director Charles Jenkins carried the banner of the Union's Civil and Human Rights Committee, which Jenkins also co-chairs. Local 100 Recording Secretary Shirley Martin rode the length of the parade on our big float, backed up a great DJ and a score of members dancing and waving to the crowds that lined 5th Avenue.

President John V. Chiarello, who attended the event along with Administrative VP Alexander Kemp, said, "This parade celebrates diversity -- something which we at TWU Local 100 support. From the days of our Founder Mike Quill, we have safeguarded the right of every union member to have a workplace free from discrimination."

Lobby Day Update: Key Bills Pass Both Houses

JUNE 27 -- Thousands of Local 100 members gathered in Albany to demonstrate support for important pro-worker legislation on Lobby Day earlier this year – and the elected officials noticed.

The New York State Legislature has now passed five bills that are on Local 100’s list of legislative priorities.

Whitfield Wins TA Surface Election for Executive Board

JUNE 26 -- Anthony Whitfield, a Bus Operator with TA Surface with 25 years on the job has won the recent election to replace Alexander Kemp on the TWU Local 100 Executive Board. The election was conducted after Kemp was named Administrative Vice President. In the certified election tally, Whitfield had 405 votes to challenger Javier F. Oquendo, who had 265.

Union's Primary Wins Include 3 Borough Presidents and Manhattan District Attorney

JUNE 27 – Candidates endorsed by TWU Local 100 secured victories in their primary elections across several key races on Tuesday. State Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and Councilwoman Inna Vernikov all clinched their contests or are widely expected to be declared winners when all ranked-choice votes are counted.

Local 100 President John Chiarello thanked the officers and members who helped mobilize votes for the candidates by distributing flyers and palm cards, as well as engaging with voters on the streets and doorsteps. The candidates are now moving on to the November general election.

Quality Celebrates End of the School Year

Quality Transportation, a TWU Local 100 represented School Bus company with branches in Brooklyn and the Bronx, celebrated the end of another school year at their HQ in East New York. On hand were our top four -- President John V. Chiarello, Secretary-Treasurer Carlos Bernabel, Recording Secretary Shirley Martin, and Admin. VP Alexander Kemp. Acting as MC was longtime Union Rep and Chair Hazel Carr, who was one of those receiving a union/management recognition award for over 20 years of service.

TWU Local 100 Celebrates Juneteenth

This is a day to celebrate the emancipation of slaves in the United States, the victories of the civil rights movement, and the march towards a more perfect union.
