New OA Truck Shop Opens at Zerega Avenue; Goal is to Bring Work In-House

MAY 7 -- The MTA’s newest maintenance facility opened up inside the Zerega Bus Maintenance and Training Facility today, a Truck Shop that will compete with outside vendors for Transit Authority work.

 

Local 100 President John V. Chiarello and Secretary-Treasurer Carlos Bernabel stopped by on opening day along with Maintenance Director Tom Lenane and Division Chair Mike Rehn. The 16 men working as Firemen and Mechanics at the new Truck Shop are represented by Vice Chair Frank Carlone (in photo right, next to President Chiarello).

Director Tom Lenane said: “This is the beginning of the future in Maintenance. We’re looking to expand as much as possible, keeping work in house and taking work away from outside vendors.”

 

The new shop will work to maintain all Transit Authority vehicles that our members currently drive and use, along with all vehicles driven by managers. Its purview includes all road service and all emergency vehicles in the fleet.

 

Unions Under Attack: May Day March Ends as TWU Rallies in Front of 2 Broadway

May 1 – On May Day, also known as International Workers Day in the US and Labor Day in most other countries, TWU Local 100 marched and rallied as part of a contingent of thousands that headed down Broadway from Foley Square, ending up at MTA Headquarters.

Speaking outside of 2 Broadway and repeatedly pointing up at the windows where MTA executives work, Local 100 President John V. Chiarello said, “Today marks the day when we put our stake in the ground, and we're gonna fight. And when we fight, we win.”

The Contract Fight Begins Here!

MAY 1, 2025 -- TWU Local 100 President John V. Chiarello kicked off the 2026 contract campaign in a rousing speech to members outside of MTA headquarters at 2 Broadway at the conclusion of the big May Day rally which progressed down Broadway. Pointing to the towering building, Chiarello said the MTA is going to try to extract concessions, but "they're not going to get it off our backs."

Waterway Drivers Approve New Five-Year Contract

APRIL 25 -- Bus Drivers at New York Waterway have voted overwhelmingly to ratify a new five-year contract negotiated by Local TWU Local 100. The agreement is retroactive to January 1 of this year and extends through 2029.

Transit Workers are Environmental Warriors

APRIL 22 -- You can breathe easier on Earth Day knowing that our system is doing more to fight against the adverse effects of climate change than any other. The transportation sector, powered mainly by fossil fuels, is the largest single source of emissions in the United States, accounting for 28% of all national greenhouse gas emissions in 2022. However, over half of these emissions come from passenger cars and trucks. In contrast, public transit emits a fraction of the emissions compared to the same commute by car.

President John V. Chiarello Meets with PBA Leadership to Advance Shared Safety Priorities

APRIL 21 -- Last Friday, TWU Local 100 President John V. Chiarello secured a meeting with the Patrick Hendry, President of the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) to address growing concerns around safety across the transit system. That meeting took place as scheduled today, April 21, 2025 marking an important step forward in building collaboration between our two unions. The conversation focused on how TWU Local 100 and the PBA can work together to improve safety outcomes for transit workers, police officers, and the riding public.
