Hurricane Irene caused a 42-hour total shutdown of the transit system. Buses came back on line on August 28, and subways on August 29th. If you reported to work, or had trouble getting to work or leaving work, and experienced any issues with getting paid for your time, call your Department for specific information.
We will grieve any case where a member has been denied pay or declared AWOL after making a documented good-faith effort to get to work and being unable to do so because the system had closed down. If you called in, swiped your pass or reported to a supervisor at a location other than your report site, please contact your union rep with name, pass number, and contact information. If you can't reach your regular rep, call the Union Hall and ask for your Department, at 212-873-6000.
The contract states that workers “reporting late because of an unusual interruption in service on the NYC Transit System shall suffer no loss of pay for time lost on that account…”
If you made it into work, even if you were late, you should be paid for the whole day. If you aren't, let us know.
