Union Holds 9/11 Medal Ceremony at 9/11 Museum as Transit Workers Get Recognition

There were tears, and some smiles, at the National September 11 Memorial Museum Monday night as Local 100 for the first time held its annual medal ceremony at Ground Zero. More than 125 transit workers and family members came to the “civic temple” to see eight workers being honored for their rescue-and-recovery work at Ground Zero. All eight became ill from their service, and two passed away.
 
Joycelyn Lee accepted a medal on behalf of her deceased husband, Work Train Operator Eddie Lee. “Unfortunately, we lost him in 2016, but when I got the call he was going to be honored, my heart was like he was alive again,” Joycelyn Lee said. Lee, who moved out of state, said family and friends back home were equally happy Eddie, and his union brothers and sisters, were getting the recognition they so rightfully deserve. “They’re already asking, ‘When are you coming back [with the Union's medal for service],’ “Jocelyn Lee said. “It’s like an Olympic medal.”

Contract Implementation Update: Timelines for Raises

TWU LOCAL 100 FORCES MTA TO IMPLEMENT JOB PICK FOR CTAs

An arbitrator sided twith TWU Local 100 and ordered the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to implement a job pick for approximately 1,500 CTA’s in the Stations Department, President Richard Davis announced.

For nearly a month, the MTA refused to put the cleaners’ work assignments into effect, apparently in a fit of anger over a lawsuit the union filed on behalf of elevator operators in Washington Heights. But Arbitrator Howard Edelman, after hearing legal arguments from both sides, directed the MTA to implement the CTA job pick by August 20.

“The MTA was playing games, messing with our members’ lives, and we weren’t going to stand for it,” Davis said. “We brought this case and won on the merits.”

TWU LOCAL 100 WINS LAWSUIT

ELEVATOR OPERATORS MUST REMAIN IN WASHINGTON HEIGHTS STATIONS, JUDGE RULES

“The MTA is wildly out of touch on this issue,” Local 100 President Richard Davis said. “Riders want more uniformed staff in the subway, not less, especially in these stations, which are 15 to 20 stories below ground and require take an elevator to get in or out. This is a win for both riders and the union.”

NYPD OFFICERS TO FOCUS ON BUSES IN TARGETED AREAS

For the first time in decades, the NYPD Transit Bureau will have officers in a dedicated unit focusing on buses – a move TWU Local 100 has been urging Mayor Adams and the NYPD to take to deter Bus Operator assaults.

The officers will accompany MTA Eagle Team security inspectors as they conduct fare-evasion enforcement along certain bus routes. The enforcement effort will target geographic areas, or “hubs,” selected in part because of their high rate of farebeating, officials said at a press conference in Brooklyn on Thursday.

“This definitely is a step in the right direction,” John Chiarello, Local 100’s Safety Director and Secretary-Treasurer, said of the joint MTA-NYPD initiative. “We hope it’s just the start of bigger things to come.”

MTA Approves Contract

The MTA board formally approved the new Local 100 contract. Board members voted on the package during the Executive Session of the Authority’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 2 Broadway. The next step is for the MTA and union to establish implementation dates for the wage-rate increases and some of the other improvements in the package. Local 100 will publicize those details once they become available. The contract requires the MTA provide members the $3,000 Essential Worker Bonus payment in September. Local 100 leadership is discussing with the MTA how members can take advantage of different pay-out options. You will have choices, including the ability to roll the bonus over into your MTA 401(k) account or 457 plan.

Quill Scholarship Winners Include 8 From Local 100

JULY 13 -- The TWU International, the parent union of Local 100, has announced 32 winners of the Michael J. Quill Scholarship awards, named after our founder. The Quill scholarships are awarded yearly to college students who are sons and daughters of union members. Of the 32 winners, 8 come from TWU Local 100, the largest Local in the International.

The 8 Local 100 winners, who will be notified by mail, include the following $4,800 winners. Each recipient will receive $1,200 each year for each of their four years of college. They are: Victoria Allen, daughter of Ronald Allen; Peter Bouzi, son of Pierre Bouzi; Yanique N. Clarke, daughter of Clive Clark; and Veronica Lin, daughter of Gregory Lin. Winners of $2,500 one-year scholarships from Urban Benefit Planners include Jah-king A. King, son of James King; Antonella C. Lazcano, daughter of Joan Lazcano; and Mitchell G. Wiggan, son of Paige Wiggan. The winner of a $2,000 one-year scholarship from M3 Technology is Dylan A. Dunbar, son of Walter Dunbar.

The votes are in!

Local 100 members ratified a new labor agreement with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority by a very wide vote margin: 68.75% in favor of the deal, and 31.25% opposed, the independent American Arbitration Association reported today.

Solid raises, $4,000 in Essential Worker bonus payments, expanded maternity and paternity leave, along with other new benefits and gains, are on the way. Importantly, Local 100 defeated MTA demands – including the demand that you pay more for your healthcare. Your health contributions will not go up. They will remain the same through the length of the 3-year contract.
